Nikolay Mihaylov was in the spotlight for most of the Stage 3 of Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana, as he was part of the breakaway of the day.
It didn’t take long to establish that escape. Nikolay Mihaylov went away soon after the start and was joined by 6 other riders – Roman Maikin (Gazprom-RusVelo), Artem Ovechkin (Gazprom-RusVelo), Enrico Barbin (Bardiani – CSF), Garikoitz Bravo (Euskadi Basque Country – Murias), Antonio Molina (Caja Rural – Seguros RGA) and Jorge Cubero (Burgos-BH).
They gained the maximum advantage of 4 minutes. Despite solid work and good cooperation among the escapees the breakway didn’t have too much of a chance in the battle against the peloton. Team Sky, whose rider wore the leader jerseys after Stage 2, was very motivated to close the gap and set strong pace at the front of the pack.
Mihaylov and his fellow escapees had to let it go, with 13 kilometers to go, when the bunch reeled them in. At that point the teams of the sprinters took over the race, trying to position their leaders for the finish.
In the nail biting finale, Dylan Groenewegen outsprinted Nacer Bouhanni by a hair’s breadth. Alexander Porsev took 3rd. Bartłomiej Matysiak was the team’s top finisher, as he crossed the line in 15th place.
