Vuelta a Murcia: Rutkiewicz the highest.

The winner of the 1st stage of Vuelta Cyclista a Murcia was a rider of the Movistar team, Nairo Quintana. The highest-ranked rider of CCC Polsat Polkowice was Marek Rutkiewicz, who crossed the finishing line in the 32nd place.

During the 1st stage of Vuelta Cyclista a Murcia the riders had a very difficult, mountainous route to ride, 198 kilometres long, leading from Balneario de Archena to Sierra Espuña. On their way to the finishing line the riders had as many as four climbs to pass, among which the last one, at Alto Collado Bermejo, situated in the 185th kilometre was of the highest, first category and it was the most difficult for the riders.

At the beginning of the team out of the peloton a group of eight riders rode away, among which there was Tomasz Marczyński, in this season representing the colours of Vacansoleil-DCM. The riders quite soon gained their lead the peloton, reaching almost 5 minutes. Passing the further kilometres of the route the break-away group settled the sprint stages and climbs. When there werre a few dozens kilometres left before the end of the race quite serious attempts to eliminate the break-away started in the peloton, involving, apart from the team of Euskatel, also the CCC riders. Right before the final uphill stretch at Alto Collado Bermejo the breakaway got finally eliminated and the peloton was quite torn.

In the uphill stretch for the last climb Jonathan Tiernan-Locke (Endura Racing) and Nairo Quintana (Movistar) attacked, this time succeeding in passing the climb. There were only 4 kilometres of a winding, steep downhill stretch was left before the finishing line, which Quintana coped best with, crossing the finishing line with a 14-second lead, as the first rider, beating Wouter Poels (Vacansoleil-DCM) and Tiernan-Locke.

Along the final kilometres the team of CCC Polsat Polkowice had very difficult moments. In one of the crashes Bartek Matysiak suffered quite badly. He did not give in, though, and with the help of Grzegorz Stępniak and Piotr Gawroński he managed to negotiate the difficult uphill stretch at Alto Collado Bermejo and reach the finishing line together.

Marek Rutkiewicz coped the best way with the uphill stretch, arriving at the finishing line in the 32 place, 3.16 minutes behind the winner..
