Witecki: ‘you have to estimate your strength really well’.

In China, together with his team-mates from CCC Polsat Polkowice, is Mariusz Witecki, who is taking part in Tour of Qinghai Lake. In his website ‘Witek’ reports from the course of the second stage. Let us remind that it was won by Mateusz Taciak, who became the new leader of the race.

– Two stages and the prologue of the Tour of Qinghai Lake race are behind us. We flew here over two days before the start, so we had a moment to get used to the altitude, because we have been staying about 2700 metres above the sea level.

– On the first days we felt that it feels very hard to ride already at over 20km/h we would get short of breath, that is why we wanted to ride the first stages more calm, at ease.

– In the prologue and the first stage we rode like that. Today, in the second stage we had hoped that despite a climb of the H category (3445 m above sea level) a bigger group would also reach the finishing line, because there were still over 60 kilometres to it, but the race went in a slightly different way and after the mountain a group of 25 cyclists formed and we had four cyclists (Marek Rutkiewicz, Mateusz Taciak, Jacek Morajko and me). At the beginning the cooperation went on quite well, until 25 kilometres before the finishing line, when actions started. Twelve cyclists jumped forward, including Marek [Rutkiewicz] and Mateusz [Taciak] .

– For us it was a very good situation. In the final stretch Marek helped Mateusz and winning the stage and the jersey of the leader and of the points was achieved. It is still far to the end of the race and there are still several really hard stages to come, so tomorrow we will try to lead out the leader, but for sure not at all costs, because at that altitude (two stages at over 3300 metres above sea level) it may cost a lot and then the price is high for it. And to ride next mountains stages you have to estimate you strength really well.
