Wyścig dookoła Mazowsza: Stępniak and Kiendyś in the main break

Stage 1 of Wyścig dookoła Mazowsza ended with a sprint from 18-man group. It included two “riders in orange”, GC runner-up after the prologue, Grzegorz Stępniak and Tomasz Kiendyś.

148-kilometer stage from Warszawa-Wesoła to Ciechanów kicked off with many breakaway attempts. The situation in the front was changing constantly, but nobody was able to create bigger gap. It took more than half of the distance to establish a leading group. It consisted of 18 men. Among them there were two CCC Sprandi Polkowice riders – Grzegorz Stępniak and Tomasz Kiendyś. Also race leader, Konrad Tomasiak was involved in that move.

They gained over 1 minute advantage and they maintained it all the way to the line. They hold off the bunch and the stage podium was decided in a sprint. Kersten Thiele (Rad-Net Rose Team) was the fastest, but Nikita Panassenko (Seven Rivers) was not far behind and took 2nd. The fight for further places was very tight and Twan Brusselman (Jo Piels) managed to claim third. Grzegorz Stępniak finished in 5th.

Because of the bonus seconds collected at the finish, Thiele took over the GC lead. Stępniak currently sits 3rd overall, 7 seconds behind.
