On the day the three-week Giro d’Italia kicks off, another part of the CCC Sprandi Polkowice team will start off Polish stage race, CCC Tour – Grody Piastowskie.
It’s very important race for our squad, since our sponsor, CCC and our headquarter, is based in that area – Piotr Wadecki, DS of CCC Sprandi Polkowice explains – This year’s edition is going to be very hard, due to hilly stage 2 which features mountain top finish. Good climbers will be battling for the overall win and we believe that with the roster we have selected, we are capable of winning this race.
The “orange squad” will consist mostly of youngsters, as there are 4 espoirs in the lineup. It includes the trio, which was originally on the provisional roster for Giro d’Italia and is in the top shape – Adrian Kurek, Michał Paluta and Leszek Pluciński. In case of a fast finale, Alan Banaszek will be the team’s sprinter, while Patryk Stosz, Piotr Brożyna, Kamil Małecki and Jakub Kaczmarek will try to ride aggressively and help their teammates.
CCC Tour – Grody Piastowskie will kick off with a city criterium in Legnica. The results of it won’t affect overall standings, but the 32-kilometer race will select first leaders of various classifications.
Stage 1 will start from Złotoryja, from where the peloton will head towards Jawor. There are two 29-kilometers laps planned out for the finale. First day of racing may have already an impact on the GC, as there are three cat. 1 climbs on the menu Podgórki (74,9km into the stage) and twice Pomocne (122 and 151km). In total the peloton will cover 166km.
The hardest and most decisive stage will be held on Saturday. Stage 2 features five cat. 1 climbs (Przełęcz Woliborska – 14,2km, Przełęcz Sokoła – 37,3km, Przełęcz Walimska – 46,5km, Przełęcz Jugowska – 68,8km, Przełęcz Woliborska – 87,8km) and a mountain top finish to Srebrna Góra (Twierdza).
Even though there are two cat. 2 hills (Grodowiec) late in the final stage, it’s very likely it will come down to a bunch sprint finish in Polkowice.
