The core of the team will be the riders from the previous team CCC Polsat Polkowice: Marek Rutkiewicz, Tomasz Kiendyś, Bartłomiej Matysiak, Mateusz Taciak, Dariusz Batek, Adrian Honkisz, Sylwester Janiszewski, Paweł Charucki and Rafał Ratajczyk. Three young riders will be a great support for out team: Piotr Gawroński, Łukasz Owsian and Grzegorz Stępniak. In the composition of the team there is also the young, 23-year old Champion of Bulgaria in individual time trial, Nikolay Mihaylov, with whom a one-year contract has been signed.
Below, there are profiles of the three new riders, together with their sports achievements.
Piotr Gawroński, is one of the most frequent prize winners of the young generation. He was born in 1990 in Golczewo (the zachodniopomorskie voivodship), where he worked from the earliest years of his life, in the local Dolce-Vita club, he tried himself in cycling. Piotr took a liking to practising that sport and at the junior’s age he achieved his first international successes. At the Championships in Sofia he won the bronze medal in individual time trial, and a year later, in the Italian Arona, he reached for another bronze medal of the Chapmionships of Europe, this time in a mass-start race. From 2009 he was racing for the last three seasons in the team led by Leszek Szyszkowski – MG Kvis Norda Pacific Toruń, where he achieved his biggest successes. In the cycling season of 2010, already as a U-23 category rider, in the Turkish Ankara he had achieved his best success until then, winning the gold medal in the mass-start race. That season turned out to be very successful for Piotr Gawroński, because apart from the gold medal in Ankara, he won in the U-23 category medals of Championships of Poland. During the road cycling Championships of Poland in Kielce he won the bronze medal in individual time trial, and at the Mountains Championships of Poland in Podgórzyn – Borkowice, he enriched his collections of medals with another, silver one. The season of 2011 turned out to be unlucky for Piotr. An injury suffered during a race in Italy, and a long recovery did not let him reach the high cycling form, and thus further successes were out of the question. Despite that Piotr Gawroński was appointed into the National Team of Poland for Tour de Pologne and in the general classification of the Cup of Poland he was ranked in the 1st place. The great cycling talent, excellent successes so far, professionalism in practising that sport allowed Piotr to sign his first professional contract.
Piotr is a valuable find for my team – said Piotr Wadecki, the sporting director of CCC Polkowice. His great commitment in doing that sport, great possibilities, as well as the successes already achieved will be made use of by the team fully, and I hope that he will be able to continue developing his cycling talent with us, to win the precious experience and to reach for further successes, for the benefit of CCC Polkowice and of the Polish cycling.
Łukasz Owsian is another young talent from the school of Leszek Szyszkowski. He was born in 1990 in Toruń, where his love affair with the bicycle started and quickly became his passion. As early as during his education of Szkoła Mistrzostwa Sportowego in Toruń, in the junior category, he achieved his first successes during the Championships of Poland, racing both on the road and also on the track. His first serious junior successes were achieved by him in the cycling season of 2007, when he took several first places in the races of the Cup of Poland cycle winning the titles of the Champion of Poland both in two-man and in team time trial. His good results allow qualifying him to the National Team of juniors for the Championships of Europe and of the World, where he took high 10th and 13th places respectively. The season of 2008 meant further gold medals of the Championships of Poland in two-man race and in team time trial, as well as the gold medal of the track Championships of Poland in the team. The next seasons are further, strenuous work, which brings further successes. In 2009, already as a U-23 rider, he becomes a rider of the MG Kvis Norda Pacific Toruń team and overseen by coach Leszek Szyszkowski he gains further cycling experience, reflected into further successes, both in Poland and abroad. He achieved his greatest successes in the season of 2011, in which he won the silver medal of the Championships of Poland in the U-23 category, the silver medal of the Championships of Poland in the mass-start race, and the gold medal of the Mountains Championships of Poland in Podgórzyn.
One more of the three young riders who are going to race in the team of CCC Polkowice in the season of 2012 is Grzegorz Stępniak. He was born in 1989 and he had his first experiences related to cycling overseen by coach Franciszek Harbacewicz in the cycling club LKS Duet Goleniów. Grzegorz is a cyclist who has achieved his greatest successes so far on the track, racing as a rider of the ALKS Stal Grudziądz team. In the season of 2009, in Mińsk, during the Championships of Europe in track cycling he won the bronze medal in the team race for 4000 m of the U-23 category. In the same year, during the Championships of Poland he confirmed his excellend condition, and he became the Champion of Poland in teams 4000 metres race, as well as the silver-medal winner in the 1000 metres race. In the next cycling season, of 2010, during the young-rider Championships of Europe in track cycling held in Sankt Petersburg, he won the bronze medal in omnium again, in the U-23 category. During the same year he added 2 gold medals of the Championships of Poland to his collection (4000 m team race and omnium), 2 bronze medals(4000 m team race, team sprint race), everything in the U-23 category, as well as the gold and silver medal in the Elite (4000 metres team race and omnium). In the cycling season of 2011 he achieved successes on the road, too, becoming the triumpher of the Race for the Cup of the Baltic in the U-23 category. During the race Poland – Ukraine, he stood on the highest place of the podium twice, and during the Championships of Poland he took the 7th place in individual time trial. He represented Poland during the World Championships in Copenhagen in the U-23 category, taking in the mass-start race the highest place among the Polish riders – the 34th one.
I hope that the three new rider gained for the team, will be a strong support for the whole team, and a chance for them to present their abilities in the professional peloton, and reach for further successes in their sporting career – said Piotr Wadecki.
